:: THE STUDIO WORLD

-> The studio :

La Maison Niepce
The studio is a protected experimentation field for any photographer wishing to learn how to control the light.
It favors experimentation based on the observation and reproduction of the light natural cycle.

The studio is a place to be reinvented for every shoot. The careful observation of the reaction of the different textures to different lightings is the key to success in the studio.

-> The light :

Lighting is the very basis of every photographic research.
As natural light varies continuously, it is not always possible to use it. Every photographer must know how to reproduce it artificially. That’s the lighting work.
As any language, the lighting exercise requires the acquisition of technical notions and of a specific vocabulary. We will speak in terms of light quality, shadows and high lights, contrast, directions, intensity.

These notions require from the student a real personal observation effort to complete the course because the apprehension of light is empirical and can hardly be taught.

-> Technical aspect :

Photography is a language. Mastering the technique will allow everyone to renew and enlarge his field of expression.

The particularity of Speos instruction is the teaching of the Stop-system. This method allows each student to make a link between all the subjects taught at Speos through the common essential basic principles of photography.
It also allows the students to get quickly familiar with every type of equipment offered by the different constructors.

There is presently a big evolution of the photographic techniques. Digital shooting requires a renewal of the skills and a modification of our work methods. The alternative use of film and digital photography allows the student to understand better the particular use and result of each technique. During all the classes, focus will be put on a methodic approach of the lighting exercise.

-> Aesthetical aspect of the image :
During program, each participant is accompanied in his personal research and the affirmation of his own style.

The photographic style work, the research of a specific matter, the pre-visualization of the intention, the interpretation and the appropriation will be research guidelines that we will follow all year long.

Knowing the different actors of the professional world, knowing the visual codes used by the market, determining the mode of production, making technical choices, balancing the time between the shooting work and the retouching work, respecting constraints, these competences constitute all the quality and the know-how of a photographer.
